Police Kill Gunman After Two Wounded in Restaurant Shooting

Illinois State Police said the shooting stemmed from a domestic violence case and no officers were injured.

CARPENTERSVILLE, IL — A Carpentersville police officer shot and killed a man early Saturday after authorities said the man opened fire and wounded two people at La Ilusion Restaurant & Bar in a northwest suburban shopping center.

Illinois State Police are investigating the officer-involved shooting, which happened shortly after midnight in the 1300 block of Kings Road near Illinois Route 25. Officials said one of the two people shot by the gunman was in critical condition and the other victim had stabilized. The suspect’s name had not been released Saturday.

Carpentersville police were called about 12:03 a.m. for a report of shots fired at the restaurant and bar. State police said a responding Carpentersville officer arrived and saw the suspect actively shooting at a person. The officer fired, striking the suspect. Authorities said the suspect was pronounced dead. Police said no officers were hurt during the shooting.

The two victims were taken to area hospitals after being shot by the suspect, according to state police. Officials said one victim remained in critical condition Saturday, while the other victim’s condition had stabilized. Authorities did not release the victims’ names, ages or hometowns. Police said the people involved appeared to know one another, and investigators described the attack as an isolated incident tied to domestic violence.

The shooting unfolded at La Ilusion Restaurant & Bar, part of a shopping center along Kings Road. Video and photos from the scene showed police tape around the parking lot and evidence markers near the business. Bullet holes were visible in the restaurant’s windows after sunrise. The shopping center also includes other businesses, including a taqueria and a supermarket, drawing concern from workers who arrived later Saturday and found the area blocked by police.

Kevin Realzola, the restaurant’s general manager, said his father was inside the supermarket next door when gunfire broke out. Realzola said he went to the scene after hearing from him. “I raced here. It was a little crazy. I never heard my dad that shocked before,” Realzola said. His father told reporters he came outside and saw a woman on the ground after the shots were fired.

The restaurant’s owner said officers arrived quickly and saw the shooter firing before police opened fire. Nearby business owner Fidel Lomeli, who owns C’Ville Pawn Shop, said he checked camera footage after seeing the police response and signs of gunfire. “Once they had the pictures of the shooting, the bullets and all of that, I was like man, it’s something serious,” Lomeli said.

State police will review the officer’s use of force as part of the investigation. That review is standard after a police shooting in Illinois and can include witness interviews, body camera footage, physical evidence and reports from the first officers on scene. Officials had not said Saturday whether the officer had been placed on administrative status, whether a firearm was recovered or when the suspect’s identity would be released.

Carpentersville police said the case did not pose an ongoing threat to the public. La Ilusion’s management said the restaurant and bar planned to close at least for Saturday. Staff members were reported safe, while investigators continued to process the scene and gather statements from people who were in and around the shopping center when the shooting began.

The investigation remained active Saturday evening. The next major updates are expected from Illinois State Police, the Carpentersville Police Department or the coroner’s office as officials identify the suspect, confirm the victims’ conditions and release more details about the domestic violence case.
