BROOKLYN, NY — New York City police were searching Sunday for a gunman who fatally shot 27-year-old Gurdeep Singh of Queens after an apparent street confrontation in East New York, an encounter investigators believe may have stemmed from road rage.
Police received a 911 call around 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, reporting a shooting on Crescent Street near Stanley Avenue. Officers arriving at the scene found Singh with gunshot wounds to his upper body. Emergency medical workers took him to One Brooklyn Health-Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. No arrest had been announced as of Sunday.
Investigators have not publicly established a motive, and authorities have described road rage only as a possible explanation for the confrontation. Police have not released the suspected gunman’s identity or announced criminal charges. The circumstances that brought Singh and the other person together remain under investigation.
Surveillance video obtained by CBS News New York appears to show two people involved in a confrontation in the street before flashes consistent with gunfire are seen. One person falls to the ground, while the other returns to a vehicle and drives away. Police spent hours examining the neighborhood and looking for evidence late Friday and into Saturday morning.
A deli owner who asked News 12 not to be identified said Singh had been on a scooter and became involved in an argument with a man driving a car. The witness said people nearby tried to calm the confrontation before he retreated into his store. That account offers one view of the moments before the shooting, but police have not publicly released a full sequence of events.
Another person who works nearby told CBS News New York that he heard several shots and initially thought the sounds were fireworks. Residents described a heavy police and emergency response after the shooting. Investigators have been reviewing available surveillance footage as they work to identify the person who fled.
Singh was identified by police as a Queens resident. Reports from India also identified him as an Indian national from Punjab. Some overseas reports gave conflicting information about his age, but New York reporting citing police identified him as 27. Authorities had not publicly released additional biographical information about him in connection with the homicide investigation.
The killing occurred in the NYPD’s 75th Precinct, which covers East New York and nearby communities. CBS News New York reported that the precinct had recorded at least 28 shooting incidents this year, compared with 27 at the same point last year. The local figures come as shootings citywide have declined: the NYPD said earlier this month that New York recorded 381 shooting incidents during the first seven months of 2026, the lowest total for that period in the department’s recorded statistics.
The East New York shooting came two days after a separate killing in the same precinct. Police said 17-year-old Ahmir Jordan was fatally shot inside a business on New Lots Avenue on Wednesday, and investigators were searching for two people in that case. Police have not indicated that the two killings are connected.
Detectives continued searching for Singh’s killer Sunday, and no arrest had been announced. Police had not publicly confirmed whether the confrontation began with a collision, another traffic dispute or some other encounter. The investigation into both the shooter’s identity and the motive remains ongoing.
