Investigators linked the abduction of 22-year-old Eddrick Bethune to his death and a vehicle found burned miles from the apartment complex.
NORTH MIAMI, FL — Authorities are searching for suspects after a 22-year-old man was abducted following gunfire at a North Miami apartment complex and later found fatally shot along a roadway in South Miami-Dade, investigators said.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Eddrick Bethune. Investigators said Bethune was abducted from the Aliro Apartments at 14040 Biscayne Blvd. after a shooting shortly after midnight Sunday. Hours later, a sheriff’s office captain found Bethune dead near Southwest 216th Street and 189th Avenue. Detectives also found a vehicle they believe was used by the abductors burned in another part of South Miami-Dade.
North Miami police responded to the apartment complex at about 12:07 a.m. after receiving reports of gunfire. Residents described hearing numerous shots, while cellphone video recorded at the complex showed people climbing or jumping from a broken upper-floor window and fleeing. Investigators have not confirmed whether the people shown jumping from the building were involved in the shooting or Bethune’s abduction.
Witness accounts provided another piece of the investigation. CBS News Miami reported that witnesses described seeing two men wearing shirts marked “police” struggling with and beating a man before forcing him into the back seat of a vehicle. Authorities had not confirmed whether the man described by those witnesses was Bethune. No law enforcement agency has said the men were actual police officers.
The investigation expanded across Miami-Dade County Sunday morning. At about 7:25 a.m., a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office captain discovered a man with multiple gunshot wounds along the shoulder of the roadway near Southwest 216th Street and 189th Avenue, according to investigators. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and was later identified as Bethune.
Detectives also investigated a burned vehicle near Southwest 248th Street and 157th Avenue. Authorities said arson investigators determined the vehicle had been intentionally set on fire. Investigators said it matched the description of the vehicle used by the people involved in the North Miami abduction, connecting another scene to the widening investigation.
Video from the apartment complex showed a chaotic scene after the gunfire. At least two people were recorded jumping from a window before running away. Money could also be seen scattered on the ground near the building. Police have not publicly explained the significance of the money or established whether the people captured in the video were suspects in Bethune’s killing.
The case stretches more than 40 miles from the North Miami apartment complex to the area where Bethune was found. Investigators have not publicly disclosed a possible motive, identified the people they are seeking or announced criminal charges. Authorities also have not released a complete account of what happened inside the apartment before Bethune was taken away.
Residents of the apartment complex told local news organizations that the gunfire and subsequent investigation left them concerned about safety. Police maintained a presence at the property as investigators worked to determine how the shooting, abduction, Bethune’s death and the burned vehicle were connected.
No arrest had been announced as the investigation continued. Detectives were seeking information that could help identify the people responsible and clarify the sequence of events that began at the North Miami apartment complex and ended with Bethune’s death in South Miami-Dade.
