Police Shoot Man Accused of Holding Woman, Child at Gunpoint

The man was hospitalized in critical condition after officers responded to a domestic incident near Stone Mountain, police said.

DEKALB COUNTY, GA — A DeKalb County police officer shot a man Tuesday morning after authorities said officers encountered him holding a woman and a child at gunpoint during a domestic incident near Stone Mountain.

Officers were called shortly after 8 a.m. to Central Drive near North Hairston Road in unincorporated DeKalb County, according to police. Authorities said the armed man refused repeated commands to put down his weapon. An officer then fired, striking the man. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The woman and child were safely removed from the scene, police said. No other injuries were reported. Authorities had not released the names or ages of the man, woman or child as of Tuesday afternoon, and police had not publicly described their relationships beyond calling the incident a domestic situation.

Police have not released additional details about what happened before officers arrived or what prompted the confrontation. Authorities also had not publicly identified the officer who fired or said how many shots were fired. The available reports do not indicate that the woman or child suffered physical injuries during the encounter.

The shooting occurred near Central Drive and North Hairston Road, an area where Georgia Department of Transportation cameras showed several police vehicles after the incident. Police activity affected the immediate area as investigators worked at the scene.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was asked to investigate the police shooting. State investigators commonly review shootings involving law enforcement officers to determine the circumstances surrounding an officer’s use of deadly force. Authorities had not announced any findings from that review Tuesday afternoon.

The man remained hospitalized in critical condition after the shooting. Police had not announced criminal charges, and no motive or cause for the domestic dispute had been released. The identities of those involved also remained undisclosed.

The investigation is continuing, with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation examining the officer-involved shooting while DeKalb County authorities handle other aspects of the incident. Additional information, including the man’s condition and details about the events leading to the confrontation, had not been released.
