Police are searching for those responsible after gunfire wounded seven people near the Douglass Homes development Wednesday night.
BALTIMORE, MD — Seven people, including a 3-year-old boy, were wounded in a shooting near the Douglass Homes development in East Baltimore, prompting an ongoing search for those responsible, police said.
The shooting happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the 1400 block of East Fayette Street near North Caroline Street. Baltimore police said an officer who was patrolling nearby heard gunfire, turned toward the scene and found several people suffering from gunshot wounds. The young boy was placed in a patrol vehicle and rushed to a hospital, where he underwent surgery.
Police said the victims were a 3-year-old boy, a 16-year-old girl, four men ages 18 to 21 and a 43-year-old woman. The boy remained hospitalized in serious but stable condition Friday, while the other victims’ injuries were described as non-life-threatening. The adult victims had been released from hospitals, according to the latest available reporting.
Authorities briefly released conflicting information about the youngest victim. Police initially identified the child as a 3-year-old boy, later reported that the victim was a 4-year-old girl and then corrected the information Thursday evening, confirming that the child was a 3-year-old boy. Police have not publicly identified the victims by name.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said investigators believe a group of people opened fire and that the gunfire appeared to have been directed in one direction. Police have not announced how many shooters they believe were involved, released a suspect description or identified a motive. No arrests had been announced as of Friday.
Mayor Brandon Scott condemned the shooting during remarks after the attack, focusing particularly on the young child among the victims. He urged anyone who knows who was responsible to provide information to police. Worley also appealed for help from the public as detectives worked to identify the shooters.
The shooting brought an increased police presence to the area and prompted community reaction Thursday. Anti-gun violence advocates from We Our Us and Safe Streets gathered near the scene, while residents expressed alarm about the violence. City violence-prevention officials also said they were working to support people in the neighborhood following the shooting.
Metro Crime Stoppers is offering a $7,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and felony charges in the case. A separate organization, the Youth Peace & Justice Foundation, announced up to a $5,000 reward for information that directly helps law enforcement identify and apprehend those responsible.
Police continued searching for suspects Friday. Investigators have not released a motive or announced charges, and the circumstances leading to the shooting remain under investigation.
