Police released surveillance video of the masked suspect months after Alonzo Sauls was shot and robbed near South MacGregor.
HOUSTON, TX — A Houston man who survived being shot during a robbery in his senior living complex’s parking garage is warning others about the danger as police continue trying to identify and locate the gunman.
Houston police released surveillance video showing the suspect approaching Alonzo Sauls in a parking garage off South MacGregor around 3:15 a.m. on Dec. 28. The attack happened about eight months before Sauls spoke publicly about his experience. The gunman remained at large when the latest report was published, and police were seeking information that could help identify him.
The surveillance video shows a masked person walking through the garage with a flashlight and looking into vehicles before approaching Sauls. Sauls was sitting inside his truck when the person looked into it, walked away and then returned with a gun, according to his account and the video described by ABC13 Houston.
Sauls said the armed man demanded his wallet and keys before shooting him once in the stomach at close range. Sauls underwent surgery that lasted about eight hours and remained hospitalized for three weeks. He later said he was grateful to have survived the attack.
The shooting left Sauls concerned not only about what happened to him but also about the safety of other people using parking garages. “They need to know these garages are not safe,” he said. He urged people to remain alert to their surroundings when entering or leaving garages.
Police have released details about the person they are seeking in hopes that someone will recognize him from the surveillance footage. Investigators said the suspect wore a molded face mask, ripped jeans and black-and-white Nike shoes. Authorities had not publicly identified the man or announced an arrest as of the latest report.
Sauls said he hopes the release of the footage will generate information that helps investigators find the person responsible. His account provides investigators with a description of what happened inside the garage, while the surveillance footage gives police a visual record of the person they believe was involved.
The case remains unresolved months after the shooting. Houston police continue searching for the gunman, and no information about a possible motive beyond the reported robbery or the suspect’s identity had been publicly released in the latest reporting.
