Hong Kong – Four American college instructors teaching in China fell victim to a violent stabbing incident at a bustling public park. The educators, associated with Cornell College in Iowa, were participating in a partnership program with Beihua University in Jilin, China. The college confirmed that the instructors were injured in what was described as a serious incident.

Cornell College President Jonathan Brand assured that all four instructors were being assisted during this challenging time. Fortunately, no students were involved in the program at the time of the attack. Despite the distressing nature of the incident, specifics regarding the motive and the identity of the assailant or assailants remain unclear. Chinese authorities have yet to provide any information or address the situation.

Footage circulating on Chinese social media depicted the aftermath of the attack, showing the wounded instructors on the ground surrounded by onlookers. The victims were seen conscious and communicating on their phones despite their injuries. The attack occurred at Beishan Park, a popular green space in Jilin city, less than half an hour’s drive from Beihua University.

Iowa state representative Adam Zabner revealed that his brother, David Zabner, was among those injured in the stabbing incident. Thankfully, David is said to be recovering well after receiving medical treatment. The other three victims also survived the attack, though specific details about their condition were not disclosed.

The incident has sparked concern both in Iowa and in China, as officials and lawmakers express worry over the violent assault. The state government of Iowa condemned the attack, emphasizing the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of the victims. Meanwhile, efforts to strengthen educational exchanges between China and the United States continue, despite the incident posing a temporary setback to the collaborative efforts between the two nations.

China’s initiatives to foster educational cooperation with the US have faced challenges due to the global pandemic and ongoing tensions between the two countries. However, Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s commitment to promoting personal ties through exchange programs remains steadfast, highlighting the enduring connections between the two nations. As investigations into the stabbing in Jilin continue, authorities are striving to address the security concerns raised by the rare act of violence against foreigners in China.
