An 18-year-old man was killed as gunfire struck a Northeast Philadelphia store and nearby homes Monday night.
PHILADELPHIA, PA — Surveillance video shows a gunman opening fire toward a Northeast Philadelphia corner store during a shooting that killed an 18-year-old man Monday night, as police continue searching for the person responsible.
The shooting happened about 8:46 p.m. Sept. 21 at a store near Marcella Street and Summerdale Avenue in the Summerdale section of the city. Police responding to the scene found the teenager unresponsive inside the store. He had been shot in the head and was taken to Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:59 p.m. Authorities had not publicly identified him as of Tuesday.
Surveillance footage obtained by NBC10 shows the victim near the entrance of the store before the shooting. The suspected gunman can then be seen firing from outside the business. Someone inside the store appears to return fire after the initial shots, but the suspected shooter had already begun fleeing the area, according to the footage. Police have not announced whether investigators have identified the person who apparently fired from inside.
Investigators recovered about 26 spent shell casings in and around the store. Chief Inspector Scott Small said police found at least one casing inside near where the victim was located and about 25 others outside along the sidewalk and Summerdale Avenue. The number and location of the casings became part of a wider crime scene investigators were examining after the shooting.
Gunfire also struck two occupied homes in the 800 block of Marcella Street. Bullets entered second-floor bedroom windows at the properties, Small said. No one inside either home was injured. Police were examining the trajectory of the gunfire and other physical evidence as part of the homicide investigation.
Investigators also found a stolen Nissan sedan near the shooting scene after it had crashed into parked vehicles. The car was still running when officers found it, and doors were left open. Police considered the vehicle part of the crime scene and were investigating whether it was connected to the shooting. Authorities had not publicly said who had been inside the vehicle or how many people may have fled from it.
The teenager was known at the corner store and had visited the business before, according to accounts from employees reported by local news organizations. Police initially said they were examining the possibility that he had been targeted, but investigators had not announced a motive or described what may have led to the gunfire. The surveillance footage and cameras elsewhere in the neighborhood were expected to be important evidence in reconstructing what happened.
The video adds new detail to investigators’ initial account by showing the gunfire coming from outside the store while the victim was near its entrance. Authorities have not said whether the teenager and the shooter knew each other or whether the stolen vehicle found nearby was used by anyone involved in the shooting. Police also have not released the victim’s name.
No arrests had been announced and no motive had been established as the homicide investigation continued. Police were reviewing surveillance footage and evidence collected from the store, street and nearby vehicle while working to identify the shooter and determine the sequence of events.
