Authorities said the pursuit followed a fatal shooting Sunday night and ended Monday with a crash, vehicle fire and standoff.
PLANO, TX — A suspect sought in connection with the fatal shooting of a woman in Plano died Monday after a police pursuit on Interstate 35 ended in a crash, vehicle fire and standoff in northern Denton County, authorities said.
Plano police said the case began shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, when officers responded to a home on Lakestream Drive near Parker Road and Alma Drive. Police found a woman who had been shot multiple times. Investigators said they believed her ex-boyfriend was responsible and had fled the home in a black Dodge Charger. Other family members were inside the house but were not injured.
The people inside the home were able to provide investigators with information about the suspect, according to police. Detectives worked through the night to locate the Dodge Charger and set up surveillance on the vehicle. Authorities had not publicly identified either the woman or the suspect as of Monday evening.
The search moved north Monday morning when Texas Department of Public Safety troopers located the suspect’s vehicle. Valley View police said a trooper attempted to stop the Dodge Charger, but the driver allegedly fired at troopers and fled. The pursuit continued north on Interstate 35 through Denton County toward the Cooke County line.
Valley View police were asked to assist with the pursuit at about 10 a.m. The suspect’s vehicle later crashed near Valley View, authorities said. Law enforcement officers from several agencies surrounded the vehicle, leading to a standoff. Officials said the car caught fire during the incident, and flames also ignited grass in the highway median.
After the fire was extinguished, authorities found the suspect dead inside the burned vehicle. Officials had not determined publicly how the suspect died. Police also had not said whether he was injured during the earlier exchange with troopers, in the crash, in the fire or under other circumstances. Plano police said they were working with the medical examiner to formally confirm the suspect’s identity.
No law enforcement officers were reported seriously injured in the incident. The pursuit and response brought multiple agencies to the area, including state troopers and local law enforcement from communities along Interstate 35. The large police presence and emergency response forced authorities to close portions of the interstate while investigators worked at the scene.
Traffic was disrupted for several hours as officers processed the crash site and crews cleared the roadway. Both directions of Interstate 35 were affected during the response, and northbound traffic experienced significant delays. The highway later reopened Monday afternoon after authorities completed enough of their work to allow vehicles through the area.
The shooting in Plano and the events along Interstate 35 remain under investigation. Authorities have not released the names of the woman or the suspect, and officials have not announced a final determination on the suspect’s cause and manner of death. Investigators also had not publicly provided additional details about the circumstances leading to the shooting at the Plano home.
Plano police are continuing the homicide investigation while authorities review the pursuit, reported gunfire, crash and fire in Denton County. With the suspect dead, investigators are still working to establish the full sequence of events and complete the identification and medical-examiner process.
