Austin, Texas – The University of Texas at Austin has placed the Palestine Solidarity Committee on interim suspension following an event on campus that attracted a large police presence. The committee is accused of violating institutional rules, according to university spokesman Brian Davis.
In response to the suspension, the Palestine Solidarity Committee issued a statement on Instagram, denouncing it as an attack on free speech and a distraction from what they claim is Israel’s genocidal campaign against the Palestinian people. The group’s future activities, including a planned vigil, are now uncertain due to the suspension.
The university defended its decision to bring in law enforcement to prevent the rally from taking place, resulting in over 50 arrests and clashes between police and students. The Office of the Dean of Students had previously warned the committee that the event was not approved and would face disciplinary action, including suspension, if it proceeded.
Despite using terms like “occupy the lawn” in promotional posts for the event, members of the Palestine Solidarity Committee maintain they had no intention of setting up encampments or staying overnight on campus. They had a schedule planned for the event, which included study breaks and teach-ins.
University President Jay Hartzell stated that the decision to intervene was based on credible indications that the event’s organizers intended to disrupt campus activities using the guise of free speech and expression. He also noted that out of the 55 arrests made, 26 individuals had no affiliation with the university.
Hartzell highlighted that the university has previously hosted 13 pro-Palestinian events without incident, including one that took place the day following the suspended event. The university aims to maintain a balance between free expression and ensuring the safety and well-being of all students and staff.
As the Palestine Solidarity Committee awaits clarity on the terms of their suspension, the controversy surrounding the event has sparked discussions about free speech, campus safety, and the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
