Teenager arrested for double murder

CHICAGO, IL – A 16-year-old boy has been charged with first-degree murder. These charges were given in connection to the fatal shooting of two family members in Chicago’s Southwest Side. The Chicago Police Department (CPD) did not disclose the minor’s name due to his age.

Arrested on Friday, the teen was identified as the primary suspect who allegedly gunned down a 14-year-old boy and a 65-year-old man on Tuesday afternoon. The shooting occurred in Chicago’s Lawn neighborhood when a grey vehicle pulled up, and the two male occupants started shooting at the victims standing on the block of West 61st Place.

The older man was critically wounded and later succumbed to his injuries at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The younger victim was eventually pronounced dead at the scene. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victims as Juan A. Medina Jr., 14, and Mario Medina, 65 – both of whom lived on the same block where the shooting happened.

According to CPD, the suspects fled west on 61st Place following the incident. Crisis responder and victim advocate, Andrew Holmes, noted the victims were related. Holmes added that it’s unclear whether the 14-year-old victim had any relationship with the individuals who shot him.

The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
