Texas Man Killed in Phoenix DPS Detective Shooting

Authorities said Juan Jose Jimenez died after being shot near a Biltmore-area hotel.

PHOENIX, AZ — A Texas man died Wednesday after a shooting involving an Arizona Department of Public Safety detective near 28th Street and Camelback Road in Phoenix, state officials said.

Authorities identified the man as 44-year-old Juan Jose Jimenez of Wylie, Texas. The shooting drew a large law enforcement response to the Biltmore area, a busy part of east Phoenix with hotels, offices, restaurants and shopping. DPS said the scene was secure after the shooting and that no troopers were injured.

The shooting happened at about 1:51 p.m. Wednesday near North 28th Street and East Camelback Road, DPS said in a statement released the same day. Local reports placed the response outside the AC Hotel Phoenix Biltmore, near the intersection. DPS said Jimenez was taken to a hospital after the shooting and was later pronounced dead. “The scene is secure, and there is no ongoing threat to the public,” the agency said in its first public statement.

Investigators have not released what led up to the shooting, whether Jimenez was armed, what contact he had with officers before shots were fired or how many shots were fired. DPS has described the case as a trooper-involved shooting, though local reports said the officer who fired was a DPS detective. The agency also has not released the detective’s name, assignment or duty status after the shooting. No other injuries were reported by DPS.

The incident happened in the Biltmore area, one of Phoenix’s most active hotel and business corridors. The AC Hotel Phoenix Biltmore lists its address as 2811 E. Camelback Road, near the intersection where DPS reported the shooting. The area sits east of State Route 51 and north of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. Law enforcement vehicles were seen around the hotel area after the shooting, and the response disrupted a normally busy commercial stretch during the afternoon.

DPS said its personnel were investigating the shooting and listed the case under incident number I26038725. The agency did not announce any criminal charges tied to the encounter, and because Jimenez died, no court process involving him was pending from the shooting itself. The next steps are expected to include interviews, evidence review and a formal investigative report. It was not immediately clear when DPS would release video, radio traffic or additional records.

The shooting was at least the 46th law enforcement-involved shooting reported in Arizona this year, according to local tracking cited in Phoenix-area coverage. Such cases are often reviewed by a separate investigative unit or agency before findings are sent to prosecutors, though DPS had not released a full review plan in this case. Officials also had not said whether the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration or another agency was involved in the operation at the hotel.

By Thursday, authorities had released Jimenez’s name but few details about the moments before the shooting. DPS said more information was not yet available. The case remained under investigation Saturday, with the next public milestone expected when DPS releases additional findings or records from incident I26038725.
