Three Dead in Shooting, Including Two Retired SFPD Officers

Law enforcement sources identified the dead as retired Sgt. Kevin Mannix, retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix and their adult daughter.

STRAWBERRY, CA — Two retired San Francisco police officers and their adult daughter were found dead Sunday evening inside a Marin County home after deputies responded to a report of gunfire, authorities and law enforcement sources said.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office said a 911 call came in at 5:03 p.m. Sunday reporting shots fired inside a residence on Strawberry Circle in Strawberry, an unincorporated community near Mill Valley. Deputies arrived within minutes, met the person who had made the call and learned that the caller had safely left the home. After securing the area, deputies entered the residence and found three people dead.

Multiple news organizations, citing sources familiar with the investigation, identified two of the dead as Kevin Mannix, a retired San Francisco police sergeant, and Ann Mannix, a retired San Francisco police deputy chief. The third person was identified by those sources as the couple’s adult daughter, Katie Mannix. The Marin County Sheriff’s Office had not publicly released the identities early Monday.

ABC7 News reported that sources familiar with the case identified Kevin Mannix as the suspected shooter and said he fatally shot his wife and daughter before killing himself. The San Francisco Chronicle also reported, citing multiple sources familiar with the shooting, that the deaths were being investigated as a murder-suicide. Sheriff’s officials had not publicly confirmed that account or announced a motive as of early Monday.

Reports differed on the daughter’s age. The Chronicle identified Katie Mannix as 24, while ABC7 described the couple’s daughter as 25. Because authorities had not publicly identified the victims, the discrepancy could not immediately be resolved.

The Sheriff’s Office said detectives from its investigations unit were processing the residence Sunday night. Officials said the case remained in its early stages and did not provide further details about what happened before the gunfire. Authorities said there was no known continuing threat to the surrounding community.

Ann Mannix spent decades with the San Francisco Police Department and rose to the rank of deputy chief. Department records cited by the Chronicle show she became deputy chief of the Field Operations Bureau in 2018 and later oversaw the Special Operations Bureau. She also became the first woman to join the department’s SWAT team and later the first woman to lead it. She retired from SFPD in 2021.

Kevin Mannix also spent 27 years with the San Francisco Police Department before retiring as a sergeant in June 2018. San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew informed department members of the deaths of Ann and Kevin Mannix in a message Sunday night, according to reports. The department message asked officers to keep the family in their thoughts and offered support to department personnel affected by the deaths.

The shooting drew a large law enforcement response to the quiet Strawberry neighborhood Sunday evening. The person who called 911 survived and was outside the residence when deputies arrived, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have not publicly described that person’s relationship to the three people who died.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the shooting and has said additional information will be released as it becomes available. As of Monday morning, officials had not publicly announced a motive or formally identified the three people found inside the home.
