Trailblazing Cook County Clerk Karen Yarbrough Dies at 73: Remembered as a Political Powerhouse

Maywood, Illinois – Karen Yarbrough, a pioneering Maywood Democrat who dedicated over two decades to public service, has passed away at the age of 73. Ms. Yarbrough, the first Black person and first woman to serve as Cook County clerk, held various elected offices throughout her career, including serving as the Cook County recorder of deeds and a state representative.

Ms. Yarbrough’s impact on Cook County and the state of Illinois was immense, leaving a lasting legacy in her trailblazing role. Known for her leadership and commitment to public service, she was applauded by U.S. Rep. Danny Davis as an exceptional leader who effectively managed the responsibilities of overseeing the second-largest county in the country.
