Two elementary school children killed on their walk to school

RIVERDALE PARK, MD – A tragic accident unfolded near a Maryland elementary school on Monday morning, resulting in the death of two children, according to local officials.

The victims, students at Riverdale Elementary School, were struck by a vehicle around 8 a.m. as they were walking to school, said Riverdale Park Mayor Alan Thompson in a statement on social media. The driver involved in the incident remained at the scene, he added.

The fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Riverdale and Taylor roads, a location adjacent to the school, as per a post by the town police on social media.

School authorities issued a statement confirming the deadly pedestrian accident, which took place during the morning arrival period. They also offered parents the option to collect their children early from school if they desired.

Riverdale Park, a Prince George’s County town of approximately 7,000 residents, is located a few miles northeast of the Washington, D.C. border. The investigation into the incident will be carried out by the county police.
