Two officers shot, kidnapper killed, after multi-state chase

CHATTANOOGA, TN – A high-speed chase that began in Georgia ended tragically in Tennessee on Sunday, when a man suspected of kidnapping and assaulting an officer was killed in a gunfire exchange. The incident left two deputies injured, according to authorities.

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Tyler L. Roberts, was believed to have kidnapped a child. The pursuit began in Catoosa County, Georgia, and crossed state lines into Tennessee. Deputies from both states were involved in the chase, which took place on Interstate 75.

As the chase reached Hamilton County, Tennessee, local sheriff’s deputies joined the pursuit. They deployed tire deflation devices in an attempt to stop Roberts. However, the situation escalated when the suspect’s vehicle came to a halt.

Roberts allegedly opened fire on the deputies, who returned fire, resulting in his death. Two Hamilton County deputies were injured in the exchange. They were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 18-month-old child, who was believed to have been kidnapped by Roberts, was found unharmed. However, the child was taken to a hospital for a precautionary evaluation.

Hamilton County Sheriff Austin Garrett commented on the incident, highlighting the dangers law enforcement officers face daily. He added that the suspect seemed determined to evade capture, regardless of the risk to others. Further details about the incident are yet to be released.
