Woman arrested after killing four-year-old son

TAMPA, FL – A Tampa woman has been arrested on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse following the tragic death of her 4-year-old son. Authorities allege that Arayiah Hudson, 36, attempted to hide evidence of abuse by using makeup to cover the child’s injuries.

Police responded to a 911 call from Hudson’s home on N. 15th Street early Saturday morning, where she reported that her son, Joseph, was unresponsive. Despite officers’ efforts to revive the boy through CPR, he was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Initial claims by Hudson suggested that Joseph had started coughing and experiencing breathing difficulties after consuming potato chips and water. However, a medical examination revealed a grim reality. The child had multiple injuries, including bruises, abrasions, and internal bleeding. An autopsy later confirmed that blunt force trauma to the head and torso was the cause of death.

Further investigation uncovered a disturbing history of abuse. Detectives found that Hudson had allegedly used tinted makeup to conceal bruises around Joseph’s eyes. Hudson reportedly claimed that her actions were a form of discipline.

“This is a heinous crime. Every child deserves to feel safe in their own home and especially with their own mother,” said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw. “The Tampa Police Department is committed to bringing justice for Joseph and ensuring the safety of all children in our community.”

Hudson was subsequently booked into the Orient Road Jail. Authorities have removed other children from her home, placing them with their biological fathers, who do not reside with Hudson.
