Woman Dies, Infant Critical After Being Thrown From Bronx Building

Police are investigating a witness account that the woman and child were thrown from a balcony, but authorities have not confirmed it.

NEW YORK CITY, NY — A 23-year-old woman died and an infant girl was critically injured early Tuesday after falling from a Bronx apartment building, authorities said, as police investigated a witness account that the pair had been thrown from a balcony.

New York Police Department officers responded shortly before 3:40 a.m. Oct. 6 to a residential building at 2550 Olinville Ave. in the Allerton section of the Bronx. Officers found the woman and infant outside the building with injuries consistent with a fall from an elevated position. Both were taken to Jacobi Hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead. The child remained in critical condition.

The circumstances of the fall remained unclear Tuesday. A witness told police that the woman and child had been thrown from a balcony, according to WABC. Authorities had not confirmed that account and were investigating whether the pair fell, jumped or were pushed. Police were reviewing surveillance video and seeking additional witnesses as they worked to determine what happened.

The woman and child had not been publicly identified. Reports differed on the infant’s exact age, with some describing the girl as about 5 months old and an early WABC report saying she appeared to be about 1 year old. Police had not publicly confirmed the child’s age. The relationship between the woman and infant also had not been established publicly.

Police were looking to speak with a man as part of the investigation, according to multiple local reports. Authorities had not said what connection, if any, he had to the woman, the infant or the events leading to the fall. Investigators had not announced an arrest or publicly identified a suspect as of Tuesday morning.

Accounts of the incident continued to develop in the hours after police arrived. CBS New York reported that officers received a call about two people needing help and found a woman and child with injuries consistent with a fall. Gothamist, citing the NYPD, reported that investigators had not determined whether the pair fell, jumped or were pushed. Those accounts underscored that the allegation that someone intentionally threw them from the building had not been established by police.

Other local reporting offered additional details that had not been fully confirmed by authorities. WABC reported that a witness told investigators the woman and infant had been thrown from the building. Because police were still reviewing evidence and interviewing potential witnesses, investigators had not announced a conclusion about how the fall occurred.

The incident happened at an apartment property on Olinville Avenue near Allerton Avenue. City building records list 2550 Olinville Ave. as a large residential property in the Bronx. Police activity continued at the building Tuesday as investigators sought video and witness information that could help establish the sequence of events before the woman and child were found outside.

The investigation remained active Tuesday, with no arrests announced. Police had not released the woman’s identity, confirmed the infant’s exact age or publicly established whether another person caused the fall. The child remained hospitalized in critical condition as detectives continued working to determine what happened.
