Investigators are waiting for an autopsy to determine how the woman died.
HOUSTON, TX — Houston police are investigating after a woman was found dead Wednesday morning at 2300 Caroline Street near downtown, where officers said her body showed signs of trauma.
The woman’s name and cause of death had not been released as of Friday. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences must verify her identity and determine how she died before police can say whether the case will move forward as a homicide or another type of death investigation.
Officers were sent to the Caroline Street address about 6:35 a.m. June 10 after a report of a person down, police said. When they arrived, they found an unresponsive woman. Houston Fire Department paramedics went to the scene and pronounced her dead there. Houston police said in a written statement that investigators were “awaiting autopsy results” and that the woman’s body had signs of trauma.
HPD Homicide Division detectives H. Martinez and S. Chettry are assigned to the case, according to police. No suspect had been named in the initial report, and police did not release details about the type of trauma found on the woman’s body. Officials also did not say whether the woman was found inside a building, outside, or in another part of the property. Those details remained part of the pending investigation.
The scene is near downtown Houston, an area with heavy morning traffic, apartments, businesses and nearby service corridors. Police did not say whether surveillance cameras, witnesses or nearby property records had helped investigators. The early call time means officers arrived as many people were starting the workday in and around the central city. The police incident number is 0740333-26.
The next major step is the autopsy. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences will examine the body, confirm the woman’s identity and determine the cause and manner of death. Those findings could guide whether detectives classify the case as a homicide, accidental death, natural death or undetermined death. Police said the investigation remains pending until the autopsy is complete.
Authorities have not released the woman’s age, hometown or whether relatives had been notified. Police also have not said how long she may have been at the location before officers arrived. In death investigations, those details often depend on medical findings, scene evidence and interviews with people who may have seen or heard something before officers were called.
As of Friday, Houston police had not announced an arrest or released a suspect description. Detectives continued to seek information in the case while waiting for the medical examiner’s ruling.
