Woman, Gunman Dead After Shooting at Tampa Citibank Campus

An armed security guard fatally shot the attacker after authorities say he opened fire outside and entered the campus cafeteria.

TAMPA, FL — A woman was killed and a gunman was fatally shot by an armed security guard Wednesday after authorities said the attacker drove onto Citibank’s Tampa-area business campus and opened fire, triggering a massive law enforcement response while thousands of employees were at work.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said 911 dispatchers began receiving reports of gunfire at 12:11 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Sabal Center, 3800 Citibank Center. The first marked sheriff’s vehicle arrived about one minute later, and deputies immediately entered the complex. More than 3,200 people were on the campus at the time, according to the sheriff’s office.

Authorities said the gunman drove a vehicle through a fence and into a courtyard area near outdoor dining tables before opening fire with a rifle. Chief Deputy Frank Losat said the attacker fatally shot a woman before moving into a cafeteria, where an armed Citibank security guard confronted him. The guard and gunman exchanged gunfire, and the guard shot the attacker.

The suspect was taken to Tampa General Hospital at 12:24 p.m. and was pronounced dead at 1:12 p.m., the sheriff’s office said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities had not publicly identified either person by late Wednesday, and investigators had not released a motive or said whether the woman and gunman knew each other.

Four other people were taken to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, authorities told The Associated Press. Officials had not determined publicly whether those people were struck by gunfire, injured by the vehicle or hurt in another way during the incident.

The shooting prompted an unusually large response across the sprawling office campus. The sheriff’s office said 367 deputies responded, including members of SWAT, aviation, drone and K9 units, along with detectives and other personnel. More than 400 law enforcement officers from local, state and federal agencies ultimately took part in the response. Authorities said the buildings were cleared within about two hours.

Employees fled buildings or sheltered in locked rooms as officers searched the complex. Citibank Vice President David Dzien told The Associated Press that he was returning from lunch when he saw a sedan crash through a fence and then heard a burst of gunfire. He said people scattered from the area as he ran back into a building and later evacuated through a fire escape.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said the security team’s response prevented the attacker from hurting more people. The sheriff’s office said investigators were continuing a homicide investigation Wednesday night. Citigroup said it was cooperating with authorities, and CEO Jane Fraser told employees that the Tampa campus was secure and that the company was adding security at other locations as necessary.

Authorities had not released additional information about what led to the attack, the gunman’s connection to the campus or any relationship between the attacker and the woman who was killed. The sheriff’s office said additional information would be released as the investigation allows.
