5-Year-Old Girl Killed in Road Rage Shooting

Two other children were injured by broken glass after gunfire struck a vehicle carrying a mother and her five children.

HARRIS COUNTY, TX — A 5-year-old girl was killed late Saturday after gunfire struck a vehicle carrying a mother and five children along Grant Road in northwest Harris County, in what authorities are investigating as an apparent road rage shooting.

Harris County sheriff’s deputies responded about 11:30 p.m. to the 11800 block of Grant Road in the Cypress area. Investigators said the mother was driving west near Jones Road when shots were fired at the vehicle. The 5-year-old was struck by gunfire, while two other children were injured by broken glass.

The girl was flown by LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Harris County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Adriel Hinojosa said during a briefing recorded by OnScene TV. Four other children younger than 10 were in the vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. The mother was not injured.

Authorities said preliminary information indicated the shooting may have resulted from a road rage encounter. Investigators had not publicly detailed what happened immediately before the gunfire or what interaction may have occurred between the mother and whoever fired the shots.

Witnesses told investigators that the family’s vehicle had been traveling west on Grant Road from the area of Jones Road when the shooting occurred. Deputies and crime scene investigators searched the area overnight for evidence that could help determine where the shots came from and identify whoever was responsible.

Hinojosa said detectives were also interviewing witnesses as the investigation continued. The sheriff’s office had not located the suspected vehicle overnight, and authorities had not announced an arrest by Sunday morning.

Officials have not publicly identified a suspected shooter or released a detailed description of the vehicle believed to have been involved. The circumstances leading to the shooting also remained under investigation, and the description of the incident as road rage was preliminary.

The two children injured by shattered glass were reported injured during the shooting, but authorities had not announced additional details about their conditions. No injuries were reported for the mother or the other children in the vehicle.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office continued gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses Sunday as investigators worked to identify the person responsible. Authorities asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact the sheriff’s office or Crime Stoppers of Houston.
