70-Year-Old Man Dies After Independence Heights Shooting

Houston police said a suspect fled after gunfire erupted Thursday afternoon on East 44th Street.

HOUSTON, TX — A man believed to be about 70 years old died after he was shot Thursday afternoon in Houston’s Independence Heights neighborhood, where police were investigating reports of an exchange of gunfire and searching for a suspect.

Houston police responded shortly before 2:30 p.m. Oct. 8 to East 44th Street, near North Main Street. Later police accounts said officers found the wounded man, provided first aid and remained with him until paramedics took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities had not publicly identified him as of Friday.

Police said the man had been sitting in a chair beneath a tree before the shooting. Investigators said a suspect and the victim exchanged gunfire, although authorities had not released details explaining what led to the confrontation or who fired first.

Investigators were also working through conflicting witness accounts about what happened and how the suspect left the area. Police had not released a description of the person being sought, and no arrest had been announced in the available reports.

Early information from the scene differed on where the man was pronounced dead. An initial local report said officers responding to a call about a person on the ground found someone who appeared to have died from a gunshot wound to the chest. Later reports based on updated police information said officers rendered aid before the man was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead there.

Reports also gave slightly different addresses for the scene. An early report placed police at 218 E. 44th St., while later Houston police information cited the 300 block of East 44th Street. Both locations are in the same Independence Heights area near North Main Street.

Police had not released the victim’s name, identified the suspected shooter or disclosed a possible motive by Friday. Authorities also had not announced any charges in connection with the shooting.

The investigation remained active, with detectives trying to establish the sequence of events and determine how the suspect left the scene. Additional information about the victim and suspect was awaiting release by Houston police.
