A selfie taken in New York City led to a life-changing diagnosis for Megan Troutwine, a 33-year-old woman from Hudson, Florida. In the bustling city, she captured a moment with her late cousin, Tony Martinez, who resided in Harlem. Little did she know, this seemingly innocent selfie would uncover a hidden medical issue. While posing beside the reflecting pool and fountains at Rockefeller Center, Troutwine noticed her drooping eyelid in the photo. Concerned, she consulted her neurologist upon returning home.
The subsequent MRI revealed a benign mass inside her brain, identified as a meningioma, the most prevalent form of brain cancer. Troutwine underwent surgery at Tampa’s Moffitt Cancer Center to remove the tumor. However, a follow-up procedure unveiled another primary brain tumor known as a glioma. Doctors informed her that the glioma would continue to grow slowly, necessitating lifelong monitoring.
Not only did Troutwine face the challenges of battling brain cancer, but she also discovered she carried the PTEN gene mutation, increasing her susceptibility to other cancers. Since 2017, she has undergone treatments for breast and uterine cancer, further adding to her medical journey. Despite these hurdles, Troutwine remains resilient and grateful for the support she has received from friends, family, and colleagues.
Her story serves as a reminder of the unexpected ways life can unfold, prompting her to pursue a second degree in public health to continue helping others facing similar challenges.
