Baltimore, Maryland – A recent study suggests that intermittent fasting may not be the magic solution to weight loss that many believe it to be. Researchers found that the key to shedding pounds may simply lie in consuming fewer calories overall by limiting eating time.

The study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, revealed that individuals who followed a time-restricted diet for 12 weeks lost a similar amount of weight compared to those who followed a regular diet without time restrictions. This finding challenges the common belief that intermittent fasting triggers unique metabolic changes or alters circadian rhythms to facilitate weight loss.

Led by Nisa Marisa Maruthur, an internal medicine expert at Johns Hopkins University, the study involved 41 participants, the majority being Black women with obesity. Both groups strictly followed their assigned eating schedules and calorie intake, leading to a similar average weight loss of approximately 5.3 pounds at the end of the study period.
