CEDAR HILL, TX — A customer fatally shot a man who police say entered a Chase Bank armed with a knife and demanded money from employees Monday morning, prompting an investigation by Cedar Hill police with assistance from the FBI.
Cedar Hill officers were called to the bank in the 200 block of North U.S. Highway 67 Service Road at about 9:04 a.m. on Aug. 31. Police said preliminary information showed that the man entered the bank with a knife and began demanding money before an armed customer fired a gun and struck him.
The wounded man ran from the bank after the shooting and was found nearby when officers arrived, according to police. Officers immediately began providing lifesaving aid before Cedar Hill medics took him to a local hospital. He later died from his injuries.
Authorities had not publicly identified the man as of Monday night. Police also had not released the name of the customer who fired the shot. The customer stayed at the bank after the shooting and was cooperating with investigators, police said.
No police officers fired their weapons during the incident, according to the Cedar Hill Police Department. Authorities also reported no significant injuries to bank employees, other customers, witnesses or responding officers.
Detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigations Unit were interviewing witnesses and reviewing evidence, including available surveillance video. The Dallas office of the FBI was notified and responded to the scene as the investigation continued.
Police described the information released Monday as preliminary and subject to change as investigators examine the evidence. Officials had not announced whether the customer who fired the gun would face any charges, and the initial police account did not say whether the robbery suspect obtained any money before he was shot.
Chase Bank declined to comment on the incident, according to CBS Texas. Authorities have not released additional details about the suspect’s identity or the circumstances immediately preceding the gunfire beyond saying he was armed with a knife and demanding money from employees.
Police said there was no continuing threat to the public. The investigation remained active Monday night, with detectives continuing to review witness accounts and surveillance footage to establish the full sequence of events.
