Drive-by Shooting Kills One Man, Wounds two others

Police said the three victims were walking outside when someone fired from a black sedan.

CHICAGO, IL — One man was killed and two others were wounded late Monday in a drive-by shooting in the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, police said.

The shooting brought a new homicide investigation to a busy stretch of South Cottage Grove Avenue, where detectives spent the night marking evidence and reviewing what happened. Police identified the man killed as Alfred Alexander. No arrests had been announced as Area Two detectives continued to investigate.

Chicago police said two 20-year-old men and a 19-year-old man were walking outside in the 8200 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue just before 10:45 p.m. Monday when shots were fired from inside a black sedan. One of the 20-year-old men was struck in the chest and died at the scene. Police later said the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified him as Alexander. The two other victims were taken to local hospitals with leg wounds. Police said both were listed in good condition.

Video from the scene showed more than 80 evidence markers placed along the street, a sign of the number of shell casings or other items investigators were tracking after the gunfire. Police did not release a description of the shooter or say how many people were inside the sedan. Officials also had not said whether the victims were targeted or whether the gunfire came after an argument. The motive remained unknown Tuesday morning.

The shooting happened in Chatham, a South Side neighborhood with long blocks of homes, businesses and major traffic corridors. The 8200 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue sits near commercial strips and residential streets where late-night gunfire can leave investigators with a wide scene to process. The attack also came as Chicago police were responding to several violent incidents across the city in recent days. Police have not said whether Monday night’s shooting was connected to any other case.

Area Two detectives were assigned to the case, police said. Their work is expected to include reviewing surveillance video, checking ballistics evidence and speaking with witnesses who may have seen the black sedan before or after the shooting. As of Tuesday morning, police had not announced charges, recovered weapon information or released a suspect’s name. The medical examiner’s office was expected to handle formal death records for Alexander.

The shooting left a broad section of Cottage Grove marked by police tape, patrol cars and evidence markers as investigators worked through the night. The injured men survived with leg wounds, but police released no further details about their ages beyond saying one was 20 and the other was 19. Their names were not made public. Authorities did not say whether they were able to give detectives a statement.

The case remained open Tuesday, June 30, with no one in custody. Area Two detectives were continuing the homicide investigation and had not announced the next public update.
