A 22-year-old Brockton man died and seven others were wounded after gunfire erupted at a large gathering early Sunday.
TAUNTON, MA — Eight people were shot, one fatally, during a large house party in Taunton early Sunday, prompting a homicide investigation by local and state police, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities identified the man who died as Zirovick Depina, 22, of Brockton. Depina was pronounced dead early Sunday morning after the shooting at a home on Weir Street. Seven other people were injured. One surviving victim was in serious but stable condition, while the others suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Police and emergency crews were dispatched to 261 Weir St. at about 12:35 a.m. Sunday after 911 callers reported gunfire and multiple people shot. Officers arriving at the property determined that a large gathering had been taking place in the yard and found several attendees still at the scene, according to information released by authorities.
Investigators ultimately identified eight shooting victims, all of them in their early 20s. Some were taken to hospitals by emergency medical crews, while authorities said others may have left the scene and sought medical treatment on their own. Officials have not publicly identified the seven surviving victims.
The shooting led to a joint investigation involving Taunton police and Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office. State Police crime scene personnel also assisted as investigators worked to determine what happened before the gunfire and who was responsible.
No motive had been publicly announced as of Monday, and authorities had not released a detailed account of what led to the shooting. Officials also had not publicly identified a suspect. Boston 25 News reported Sunday night that no arrests had been made and that police were still searching for the shooter.
Early reports from the scene initially said multiple people had been shot but did not provide a confirmed casualty count. As investigators located victims who had been taken to different hospitals, authorities determined that eight people had been wounded. Later Sunday, the district attorney’s office confirmed Depina’s death and the conditions of the surviving victims.
The shooting occurred in a residential section of Weir Street near Sumner Street. Local television footage showed police surrounding the property and searching the area after the shooting. Reporting from the scene also showed signs that a large outdoor gathering had been held at the home before officers arrived.
Authorities have not released information about how many shots were fired, what type of firearm was used or whether investigators believe more than one person fired a weapon. No publicly released information has established a motive or explained whether the victims were specifically targeted.
The homicide investigation remained active Monday. Taunton police and Massachusetts State Police detectives continued working to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting, while officials had not announced an arrest or released additional suspect information.
