Man Fatally Shot in Philadelphia Shopping Center Parking Lot

Police are investigating after a 25-year-old man was found shot near an SUV on Fox Street Friday evening.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A 25-year-old man was fatally shot Friday evening at a shopping center on the 2800 block of Fox Street, where a security officer discovered him after reportedly seeing an altercation involving vehicles in the parking lot, Philadelphia police said.

The shooting was reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. Sept. 11. Police took the wounded man to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 5:48 p.m. Authorities had not publicly identified him as of early Saturday and said no arrests had been made.

Philadelphia Police Inspector D.F. Pace said a Pennsylvania state constable working security at the shopping center noticed an altercation involving a black Honda SUV in the parking lot. The constable went to investigate and found the 25-year-old man wounded. The constable attempted to provide aid before police arrived.

Investigators said the Honda and another vehicle left the shopping center around the time of the shooting. Officers later responded to a report of an abandoned black Honda SUV at a cemetery on the 3200 block of West Clearfield Street in North Philadelphia.

Pace said the Honda’s ignition appeared to have been broken and investigators found a significant amount of blood inside. Police believe the vehicle was registered to the man who was killed. Authorities were examining the vehicle as part of the investigation and reviewing available surveillance footage from the area.

Police were searching for one or two people who may have been involved in the shooting, Pace said. Investigators had not established what led to the confrontation or announced a motive. Authorities also said they had not recovered ballistic evidence at the time of the initial investigation.

The shopping center includes several businesses, and the shooting unfolded during the early evening hours. Police accounts focused on the rear portion of the parking area, where a witness reported seeing a fight involving the Honda before the vehicles left the scene.

Investigators were working to determine where the shooting occurred, who was involved in the confrontation and why the vehicles left the shopping center. Police had not announced any arrests or publicly identified a suspect by early Saturday.

The homicide investigation remained active as detectives reviewed surveillance video, examined the recovered Honda and sought information about the people involved. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained under investigation.
