Police arrested Jeffrey Jorge after an attack beneath scaffolding in Morris Heights left Rashaun Shettlewood dead and another man hospitalized.
NEW YORK CITY, NY — A 32-year-old Bronx man was killed and another man was wounded in a daylight stabbing in Morris Heights that was captured on surveillance video, police said. A suspect was arrested the following day and faces charges including murder and attempted murder.
Rashaun Shettlewood, 32, was fatally wounded shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 26, near Davidson Avenue and West Tremont Avenue, according to police. A second victim, a 33-year-old man whose name has not been released, was also stabbed and was listed in stable condition. Investigators arrested Jeffrey Jorge of Brooklyn on Thursday in connection with the attack.
Officers from the 46th Precinct responded at about 3:34 p.m. to a 911 call reporting two men assaulted near the intersection. Police found Shettlewood with a stab wound to his chest and the second man with multiple wounds to his torso. Emergency medical workers took both men to St. Barnabas Hospital, where Shettlewood was pronounced dead.
Surveillance video obtained by News 12 showed a man walking along the sidewalk beneath scaffolding shortly before the violence. The footage then showed people running from the area after the attack. Police sources told the station that an argument preceded the stabbing and that investigators did not believe the victims knew the alleged attacker.
Authorities have not publicly established a motive. Early reports said investigators were still working to determine what led to the confrontation, and police had not released a detailed account of the argument. The surviving victim was expected to recover, according to police.
Police arrested Jorge on Aug. 27 as investigators continued examining the stabbing. Authorities charged him with murder, manslaughter, attempted murder, two counts of assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon. Reports published after the arrest gave conflicting ages for Jorge, so police-confirmed charging information was used without stating an age.
The New York Post reported, citing law enforcement sources, that Shettlewood worked as a paraprofessional for the New York City Department of Education. The newspaper also reported that the surviving victim was his friend. Those details were not included in the initial police account of the stabbing.
News 12 reported that Shettlewood was attacked about a half-mile from his home. Police sources also told the station that Jorge had previous arrests, but the circumstances of any earlier cases are separate from the charges filed in connection with Shettlewood’s death and do not establish guilt in the current case.
The investigation remains ongoing. Jorge is accused of the crimes and is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. Police have not publicly released the surviving victim’s identity or announced a confirmed motive for the attack.
