Masked Suspects Sought After West Hollywood Shooting

Three men fled in a silver vehicle after a man was shot on Holloway Drive, authorities said.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA — Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators were searching Friday for three masked men after a shooting near the Sunset Strip left a man hospitalized Thursday evening, with surveillance video showing a confrontation shortly before gunfire erupted.

The shooting was reported about 5:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the 8700 block of Holloway Drive near Hancock Avenue, about a block from Sunset Boulevard. Deputies responding to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon found an adult man suffering from a gunshot wound. Authorities said Friday that he was expected to recover.

Investigators described the suspects as three adult men of average build who wore black hooded sweatshirts, black pants, black shoes and face masks. They were last seen leaving the area eastbound on Holloway Drive in a silver vehicle. No arrests had been announced by Friday morning.

Surveillance footage obtained by local news organizations appears to show three masked people getting out of a vehicle and approaching a man outside a retail store. The group surrounds the man and a struggle follows before gunfire erupts. The suspects then return to a vehicle and flee. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has not publicly established a motive for the shooting.

Some accounts from the scene raised the possibility that the confrontation involved an attempted robbery. ABC7 reported that another man at the scene could be heard describing the incident as an attempted robbery, but the Sheriff’s Department had not confirmed that account. Investigators had also not said whether the victim was specifically targeted.

At least 10 shell casings were recovered from the area, according to the Sheriff’s Department. NBC Los Angeles reported that a witness said the suspects’ vehicle struck a Ferrari as they fled. Early reporting about the Ferrari was conflicting. CBS Los Angeles initially reported that deputies found the wounded person inside the car, while later surveillance footage showed the confrontation taking place outside a vehicle. Authorities had not clarified what role, if any, the Ferrari played in the shooting.

The shooting occurred on Holloway Drive just south of the Sunset Strip, an area lined with businesses, hotels and residences. Video from the scene showed sheriff’s deputies securing the area as investigators examined evidence. The wounded man was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The Sheriff’s Department had released no names for the victim or the suspects as of Friday morning. Officials also had not announced what led to the confrontation or whether anything was taken from the victim. The investigation remained focused on identifying the three masked men and locating the silver vehicle seen leaving the area.

West Hollywood Station detectives are continuing the investigation. Authorities said anyone with information about the shooting can contact the station at 310-855-8850. No arrests had been announced, and the Sheriff’s Department had not confirmed robbery as the motive.
