Nine people shot after Nuggets win NBA championship

The Mile-High City was rocked by violence late last night after the Denver Nuggets won the NBA championship against the Miami Heat. At approximately 12:30 a.m. MT Tuesday morning, nine individuals were injured and a suspect was taken into custody following a shooting near the 2000 Block of Market Street.

According to Doug Schepman, public information officer for the Denver Police, most of the nine victims, including the suspect, were hospitalized and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. What began as an altercation between several individuals quickly escalated to a dangerous confrontation involving shots fired.

Footage on social media of the incident shows people joyously gathering in roadway intersections and climbing streetlights to celebrate.

Investigators with the Denver Police Department are examining the incident to fully understand what happened and why. So far, it is not clear if the victims were deliberately targeted or if there was more than one shooter involved. In the meantime, the police are actively searching for additional suspects or clues that could help in the investigation.
