**ORANGE JUICE RESEARCH UNCOVERS SURPRISING HEALTH BENEFITS: Findings Reveal Blood Sugar Secrets**

Toronto, Canada – Researchers from Toronto Metropolitan University have discovered some surprising benefits of drinking 100% orange juice compared to a sugar-sweetened beverage. The study, funded by the Florida Department of Citrus and published in the journal Nutrients, examined the effects of 100% orange juice on appetite, food intake, and glycemic response in adults. The researchers also looked into the emotions and sensory characteristics associated with the beverage.

In the study, 36 “normal weight” adults were given either 100% orange juice, an orange drink, or water before a meal. The results showed that those who consumed 100% orange juice had lower food and energy intake compared to those who drank the orange drink.

According to study co-author Nick Bellissimo, the caloric compensation from 100% orange juice was 84%, while it was -25% from the orange drink. This means that individuals tended to adjust their food intake based on their previous consumption. Additionally, blood glucose levels were lower after consuming 100% orange juice.

The researchers hypothesized that the flavonoids in 100% orange juice may slow down the digestion and absorption of sugar, resulting in lower blood glucose levels compared to the orange drink. This effect on energy intake and glycemic response persisted throughout the day.

Nutritional expert Ilana Muhlstein noted that the body can differentiate between natural sugars found in 100% orange juice and added sugars in sweetened beverages. She emphasized the importance of drinking water, especially before meals, to help lower blood sugar levels.

Overall, the study suggests that consuming 100% orange juice as a preload can lead to higher caloric compensation, lower total daily energy intake, and better blood glucose control compared to sugary beverages. This finding highlights the potential health benefits of choosing 100% orange juice over drinks sweetened with added sugars.
