Police officer shot during traffic stop

CHICAGO, IL – A traffic stop in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood turned deadly Thursday evening when a police officer was wounded and a 26-year-old man was killed in a gunfire exchange, according to local authorities. The officer, who suffered a gunshot wound to the wrist, is currently in good condition in a local hospital. Four of his colleagues, unharmed in the shooting, were also hospitalized for observation.

The deceased man, identified as Dexter Reed, 26, by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a hospital approximately 30 minutes after the incident. The confrontation occurred around 6 p.m. when officers pulled over a vehicle in the city’s West Side. The number of officers who discharged their firearms during the incident has not been disclosed.

The ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system recorded over 50 rounds fired during the altercation, according to records shared with the Chicago Sun-Times. Authorities confirmed that a firearm was recovered from the scene.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling expressed his hopes for the injured officer’s speedy recovery during a later meeting of the Chicago Police Board. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has launched an investigation into the incident. As per standard procedure following police-involved shootings, the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative duties for a period of 30 days.
