Pope Francis Skips Traditional Good Friday Celebration at Colosseum: Health Concerns Cause Last-Minute Change of Plans

Rome, Italy – Pope Francis decided to skip the traditional Good Friday procession at Rome’s Colosseum due to health concerns, the Vatican announced. This unexpected decision raised worries about his frail condition during a demanding period. The 87-year-old pontiff, who had part of one lung removed in his youth, has been dealing with ongoing health issues, including what has been described as the flu, bronchitis, or a cold throughout the winter.

Expected to head the Way of the Cross procession, Francis chose to follow the event from his residence at the Vatican instead. This change in plans came abruptly, as his chair was set up at the Colosseum’s platform and his close aide was present to assist. The Vatican released a statement explaining that the Pope wanted to preserve his health for the upcoming vigil and Easter Sunday Mass. Despite his absence, thousands of pilgrims gathered for the torchlit procession, expressing their understanding and concern for the pontiff.

His decision to sit out the event mirrored a similar choice made in 2023 when he was recovering from bronchitis. This year, however, the decision seemed more sudden. Although Francis seemed in good spirits earlier in the day during a Good Friday liturgy, he stayed seated and did not have to speak at length. Notably, he had recently visited a women’s prison for the Holy Thursday foot-washing ritual, where he displayed strength and engaged with the inmates.

After missing the Good Friday procession, Pope Francis is scheduled to lead the Easter Vigil and Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica and deliver an address on Easter Sunday. Apart from his respiratory issues, the pontiff has also undergone intestinal surgeries and struggles with knee ligament problems. In his memoirs, he emphasized his commitment to carrying out his duties and projects, dismissing any speculation about resigning due to health concerns.

Despite concerns about his health, many observers continue to show support and understanding for Pope Francis, acknowledging the demanding nature of his role and the challenges he faces. The pontiff’s determination and resilience in fulfilling his duties amidst health struggles have garnered both admiration and concern from his followers worldwide.
