Protesters Demand Ceasefire in Los Angeles Ahead of Oscars: Free Palestine Rally Set to Disrupt Event

Los Angeles, California – A march for a Free Palestine, demanding a ceasefire in Gaza, is scheduled to take place tomorrow in Los Angeles ahead of the 2024 Oscars. The protest is organized by a coalition of activists, artists, and film workers, including Writers Against the War on Gaza LA (WAWOG), Film Workers for Palestine, and SAG-AFTRA for Ceasefire, among others. They aim to raise awareness and call for an immediate end to the ongoing conflict.

Organizers anticipate a significant turnout for the rally, where participants will march, block streets, and disrupt daily activities to emphasize the urgent need for a permanent ceasefire. The group also advocates for the lifting of the blockade on Gaza and an end to the occupation of Palestine.

Film Workers for Palestine, in collaboration with Jewish Voice for Peace’s L.A. chapter, issued a statement on Instagram urging people to gather at the Cinerama Dome at 1 p.m. PT on Sunday for the march. The message emphasized the importance of continuing to push for a permanent ceasefire and the liberation of Palestinians.

The timing of the march is significant, as it coincides with both the Academy Awards and the beginning of Ramadan, a sacred month for the majority of Gazans. Additionally, Israel is scheduled to commence a ground invasion of Rafah, a city in the southern Gaza Strip where many Palestinians have sought refuge.

This demonstration follows a recent protest against the Israel-Hamas War outside the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica. Protesters at the event used recorded chants advocating for “free Palestine” and “ceasefire now.” The growing momentum of these protests highlights the public’s concerns and calls for action to address the ongoing conflict in the region.
