Purdue Alumni Share Emotional Stories of Final Four Triumph: Elation, Relief, and Pure Joy Overflowed in Historic Victory

Indianapolis, IN – Purdue basketball alumni shared their elation, relief, and pure joy as the Boilermakers clinched a spot in the Final Four after a victory over Tennessee. Former players from different eras recounted their experiences leading up to the historic moment, highlighting the emotional significance of reaching this milestone after 44 years.

Drake Morris, a standout from the Class of ’81, reminisced about his time playing for Purdue and the memories that watching the current team brought back. Morris, who understands the intensity of playing in a Final Four, expressed his pride in the team’s journey and credited their hard work and perseverance for reaching this point.

Roy Hairston, a member of the Class of ’96, took a break from cleaning his garage to watch the game and reflect on his time as a player at Purdue. Witnessing the team’s success brought a sense of nostalgia and happiness, especially as he cheered on his former teammates, including Purdue assistant Brandon Brantley.

Cuonzo Martin, a former Boilermaker from the Class of ’95, had a unique experience watching the game. Although he had to leave early to catch a flight to Missouri, where he was introduced as the new basketball coach at Missouri State, Martin remained engaged and supportive of the team’s efforts from a distance.

D.J. Byrd, a member of the Class of ’13, watched the game with his family in Fishers, Indiana, and reflected on the growth and success of the program under Coach Matt Painter. Byrd, who transitioned from playing to coaching, commended Painter for his dedication and leadership in building a strong team.

Greg Eifert, who played for Purdue in the early ’80s, celebrated the team’s victory from a condo in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Despite the noise complaints, Eifert expressed his happiness for the current team and praised Painter for his ability to cultivate talent and foster a winning culture at Purdue.
