ATLANTA, GA — A security guard shot a 23-year-old man accused of opening fire during an argument at an Atlanta adult store early Saturday, police said. The suspect later arrived at a hospital, where officers took him into custody on an aggravated assault charge.
Atlanta police responded around 6:10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, to Tokyo Valentino on Cheshire Bridge Road after receiving a report of a shooting. Officers found a 35-year-old man who had been wounded. Police said he was alert and conscious when he was taken to a hospital and was expected to survive.
Investigators initially said the 35-year-old had been involved in a dispute with someone he knew and that the confrontation escalated to gunfire. Police later identified 23-year-old James Jenkins as the suspect in that shooting. Authorities have not released the wounded man’s name or said what led to the argument.
As investigators developed more information, police said a security guard working at the business had also fired a gun during the confrontation and struck Jenkins. Police said Jenkins left the scene before officers arrived and later reached Northside Hospital in a private vehicle.
Officers located Jenkins at the hospital, where police said he was in stable condition. He was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault. An arrest and charge are accusations, and the case has not been adjudicated in court.
Police have not said whether the security guard will face any charges or released additional details about the circumstances under which the guard fired. Authorities also have not said whether investigators recovered the firearms involved in the shooting.
Chris Coleman, general manager of Tokyo Valentino, told FOX 5 Atlanta that the shooting was unusual for the business, calling the incident “shocking.” He said people began running after the gunfire and that employees could not immediately determine who had been involved.
Coleman said the business had multiple security guards working Saturday and that a guard stationed at the entrance had been screening people entering the facility. He said management was considering additional security measures, including the possible use of handheld metal detectors.
Police have not publicly disclosed what Jenkins and the 35-year-old were arguing about before the shooting. The investigation remained active as authorities worked to establish the full sequence of events and determine whether any additional charges or findings would result.
