Twelve-year-old driver crashes car into a tree, friend dies

MESQUITE, TX – A fatal incident unfolded in Mesquite, Texas, on Thursday, Jan. 4, when an SUV veered off the road and crashed into a tree. The driver behind the wheel was reportedly a 12-year-old boy, and the accident resulted in the death of another 12-year-old boy, Kevin Briones, as confirmed by police.

The SUV was heading south on the 15000 block of Lasater Road near Champlain Way when it lost control around 8:40 a.m., according to Dallas Police reports. Upon impact with the tree, Kevin was fatally injured and died at the scene. The young driver and the two remaining passengers were taken to a local hospital in stable condition.

Investigations into the incident revealed that the SUV was speeding before the crash and that an argument had sparked between the driver and one of the passengers just prior to the collision. Details about the driver’s identity have not been disclosed by authorities, and investigations are still underway.

Known as the eldest among his four siblings and a lover of soccer, Kevin often spent his free time at the New Era Boxing Gym in Texas. His mother, Michelle Briones, created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for Kevin’s funeral expenses.

Expressing disbelief over the event, a friend of Kevin’s mentioned, “I couldn’t believe it because it’s actually taking me time to realize he’s dead […] He was just too young to die.”
