Miami police said the early-morning gunfire at a home near LoanDepot Park appeared to stem from a domestic-related incident.
MIAMI, FL — Two people were killed and two others were injured after gunfire erupted early Saturday at a home in Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood, where police said the circumstances appeared to be domestic-related.
Police officers and Miami Fire Rescue personnel responded at about 6:30 a.m. to the corner of Northwest 17th Avenue and Third Street, near LoanDepot Park. Authorities found three adults who had been shot and a teenager with injuries to the head. Two of the adults were pronounced dead, while the surviving shooting victim was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Officer Kenia Fallat, a spokeswoman for the Miami Police Department, said the teenager suffered lacerations to the head and was in stable condition. The injured adult man was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center. Police had not publicly identified the people who died or the two injured people as of Sunday morning.
Authorities described the circumstances surrounding the shooting as appearing to be domestic-related, but investigators had not released details about what led to the gunfire or the relationships among those involved. Police also had not announced a motive or provided a detailed account of how the shooting unfolded inside the home.
Police remained at the property for hours Saturday as investigators examined the scene. Officers placed crime scene tape around the house and searched areas inside and outside the property for evidence. A man was seen handcuffed and placed in the back of a patrol vehicle, but authorities did not say whether he was connected to the shooting.
By Sunday morning, police had not publicly announced an arrest in the case. The presence of the detained man at the scene did not establish that he was a suspect, and investigators had not released information identifying a suspected shooter.
Initial reports differed slightly in describing the number of people wounded. Police said three adults suffered gunshot wounds, two of whom died, while the teenager suffered minor head lacerations. That left one surviving gunshot victim and the injured teenager hospitalized or treated after the incident. Some early coverage described three people as wounded when counting everyone who suffered an injury.
Neighbors described waking to the sound of gunfire and seeing police converge on the residential area. One neighbor told CBS News Miami that he heard three shots and initially thought the sound might have been fireworks. Police remained on the block for more than 12 hours as the investigation continued.
The shooting occurred close to LoanDepot Park, and the police activity affected an area used by residents and visitors traveling through Little Havana. Authorities had not released the victims’ identities or additional details about the apparent domestic circumstances by Sunday morning. The Miami Police Department investigation remained active.
