Police said multiple gunmen emerged from two vehicles and opened fire near an alley Sunday afternoon.
CHICAGO, IL — One person was killed and six others were wounded Sunday afternoon when multiple gunmen opened fire in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, police said, with one injured woman crashing her vehicle into a CTA bus after she was struck by gunfire.
The shooting happened about 12:17 p.m. Sept. 13 in the 700 block of North Christiana Avenue. Chicago police said six people were standing outside near an alley when two unidentified vehicles approached. Multiple armed people got out of the vehicles and fired at the group. A seventh person, a 30-year-old woman who was inside a vehicle, was also struck by the gunfire.
A man whose age and identity had not been released was shot multiple times and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. Authorities had not publicly identified him Sunday evening. A 24-year-old man was shot in the leg and stomach and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
The other wounded victims included a 14-year-old boy who was shot in the thighs and taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. An 18-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and went to Stroger Hospital on his own, while a 21-year-old man who was shot in the leg was also taken there. Both were reported in good condition.
Police said a 26-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to the foot and also went to Stroger Hospital on his own. He was reported in good condition. The 30-year-old woman was shot in the hip and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was initially listed in good condition.
Investigators said the woman was driving when she was struck by the gunfire and then crashed into a Chicago Transit Authority bus. The bus driver was taken to a hospital for observation. Police did not report that the driver had been shot.
The attack occurred in broad daylight and involved multiple shooters and two vehicles, according to the initial police account. Authorities had not released the identities of the gunmen or provided a suspected motive by Sunday evening. Police also had not released identifying information about the vehicles beyond saying that two vehicles approached the area before the shooting.
The shooting left seven people struck by gunfire in all: the man who died and six people who survived. Initial hospital reports listed five of the surviving victims in good condition and the 24-year-old man in critical condition. Those conditions were preliminary and could change as the investigation continued.
Area Four detectives are investigating the shooting. Police had not publicly identified the person killed or announced the identities of any suspects as of Sunday evening, and no motive had been released.
