Police said gunfire struck a vehicle carrying two women Saturday afternoon on Revere Road in Durham’s Parkwood neighborhood.
DURHAM, NC — One woman was killed and another was injured Saturday afternoon when shots were fired into their vehicle as they traveled along Revere Road in Durham, according to the Durham Police Department.
Police said the two women were driving on Revere Road around 1:30 p.m. Sept. 12 when the shooting occurred. The woman driving the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The second woman was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Authorities had not publicly identified either woman in the initial reporting.
The shooting occurred in Durham’s Parkwood neighborhood, a residential area in the southern part of the city. Police remained at the scene for several hours Saturday as investigators worked around the vehicle and the surrounding area. The crime scene tape was removed later that day.
Barbara Sanders, who lives on Revere Road, told WRAL that she heard gunfire and saw a man carrying a gun run from the area near the vehicle. She also saw people near the vehicle who appeared to be in distress. Sanders called 911 after witnessing the scene.
Sanders said the violence was unusual for the neighborhood, where she has lived for decades. “I’ve lived here over 50 years, and I’ve never seen anything like that,” she said. Police have not publicly said what led to the shooting or described the relationship, if any, between the women and anyone investigators may be seeking.
Durham police described the shooting as an isolated incident and said there was no continuing danger to the public. Investigators had not released additional details about a possible motive in the initial police information available Sunday.
The names and ages of the women had not been released in the initial account. Police also had not provided further information about the surviving woman’s condition beyond describing her injuries as non-life-threatening.
