Authorities said a 911 caller continued following a vehicle linked to an apparent armed robbery before reporting that he had been shot.
HOUSTON, TX — A man was killed Sunday after authorities said a 911 caller followed a vehicle connected to an apparent armed robbery in north Houston and later reported that he had been shot.
Harris County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched shortly after 4 p.m. Sept. 13 after a man reported that he had been robbed at gunpoint, according to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez and local news reports. The caller told dispatchers that he was following the vehicle believed to be involved in the robbery. Authorities said he was advised not to continue following it but did so.
The caller later contacted 911 again and reported that he had been shot near John Alber Road and Bauman Road. Houston police also received a report of gunfire after the vehicle entered the city. Deputies arrived and found a man with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities described the dead man as Hispanic and in his 30s. His identity had not been released as investigators worked to confirm it through fingerprinting and notify relatives. Officials said a truck at the scene belonged to the man who died.
Investigators had not publicly established Sunday night whether the person killed was the robbery victim who made the 911 calls or another person involved in the incident. Gonzalez said authorities were still working to determine the roles of those involved. No suspect had been publicly identified or charged.
ABC13 reported that the initial robbery call was connected to the 900 block of Pear Street. FOX 26 reported that investigators believed the robbery may have happened during a meeting somewhere in Harris County, possibly near the Hardy Toll Road in the Aldine area. Authorities had not released details about what was taken.
One person was being interviewed in connection with the case, authorities said, but investigators had not identified that person as a suspect. Officials were canvassing the area for surveillance footage and pursuing other leads as they tried to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Authorities also had not released the number of shots fired or said whether a weapon had been recovered. Details about who opened fire and whether anyone else remained at the scene were not immediately clear.
A Harris County sheriff’s sergeant cautioned against following people suspected of committing robberies, saying during a news conference, “Property can be replaced. Your life can’t be replaced.” The statement came as investigators continued working to determine what led from the reported robbery to the fatal shooting.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office investigation remained active early Monday, with the identity of the person killed, the identity of any suspected shooter and the circumstances of the reported robbery still unresolved.
